The BossFights are a band that, even while occasionally struggling with a consistent sound, possess an indubitable style. Though I, like others, was quick to call it rap-rock shortly after their big reveal at Nerdapalooza 2010, I am even now in the process of refining my premise. Presently I am content to say that The BossFights are instead a new school thrash band. And not merely a thrash band, mind you, but a goddamn excellent thrash band.

The Bossfights produce a rarely successful fusion of rap and rock that doesn’t sound forced. The two seamlessly mesh together in an exciting, heart pounding album that never disappoints. From the aggressive tightly-delivered raps of Zealous1 to the harmony and quick rhymes from Doctor Awkward, they aptly weave into the hard rock background to create a collage of auditory pleasure. If you want mainstream comparisons, you’d look to bands such as Papa Roach, P.O.D., or Linkin Park. However, I can’t compare The Bossfights to those bands. I feel The Bossfights are doing it better. Led by Doctor Awkward and Zealous1, The Bossfights are one of those rare fusion bands that mixes hip hop and rock with fluid lucidity. Doctor Awkward, normally a very expressive but still subdued performer completely went full epic during the set with his energy level. The crowd went spastic during their performance of Zealous1’s “Headshot.” Frankly, I was pleasantly surprised by their performance and if I didn’t already know the artists individually I would have thought they were the headlining act or at least close to it. They don’t have a full length album yet, but you can head over to their site and check out the few tracks they have available for free.
